FAQ
What is Useme, and how does it work?
Useme eliminates friction in global freelance work by handling everything that happens between “let's work together” and payment. We manage contracts, payments, and compliance so freelancers and clients can focus on the actual work.
Here's how it works: Freelancers complete a simple form, upload their finished work, and receive payment in their preferred currency. Clients get professional invoices and pay through secure channels without cross-border formalities.
For businesses: Useme replaces the overhead of traditional hiring. Instead of onboarding employees, you can engage independent contractors directly. This means faster execution and flexible team scaling without administrative costs.
For freelancers: Useme replaces time-consuming business operations. We handle business-friendly invoicing, timely payments, and online contracts so you can focus on your work instead of the formalities.
Who is a freelancer, and who is an employer?
Every transaction on Useme has two parties: a freelancer and an employer (freelancer's client).
A freelancer is an independent contractor (self-employed or without a registered business) who offers their services to clients and uses an intermediary platform like Useme to get paid for their freelance jobs.
An employer (freelancer's client) is an individual or business that needs specific services or projects completed. They commission specific projects or ongoing work to freelancers and pay for completed work through Useme.
What is a deal?
A deal in Useme is a transaction between a freelancer and their client (employer), managed by our platform. A successful deal means the freelancer gets paid, and the client receives a final invoice.
There are two ways to settle a deal on Useme:
- When the freelancer and client already work together
They can use Useme just to handle payments quickly and easily, even if they’re in different countries. To do this, the freelancer fills out the invoicing form. - When the freelancer and client meet through Useme Jobs
Freelancers can browse job listings and submit offers, while clients post jobs to find new freelancers.
Do the freelancer and the client sign a contract with each other?
No. Useme acts as an intermediary in the transaction, so we sign the agreement with the freelancer. This is done online and doesn’t require any paperwork – just acceptance of our Terms and Conditions. We resell the freelancer’s work to the client, also based on acceptance of our Terms and Conditions.
How does invoicing work?
- Client commissions work to a freelancer.
- Freelancer completes the work and has files that confirm delivery.
Useme steps in to handle payment and formalities:
- Freelancer fills out a form with client and work details and uploads the completed files.
- We email a deposit request to the client.
- After the client pays, we transfer the money to the freelancer and send the final invoice to the client.
Do I need an account to use Useme?
Freelancers need an account to work with clients through Useme. Employers don’t need an account – they’ll get all the information, payment link, and final invoice by email.
However, we recommend that employers create an account too – it makes it easier to manage documents and communicate with freelancers.
Will I get a paper copy of the agreement?
No, everything is done online, and that’s fully compliant with legal requirements.
What types of jobs can I manage through Useme?
Freelancers can invoice their clients for most remote jobs in areas like web development, IT, multimedia, marketing, design, translations, admin support, hosting, and advertising.
Do I need to have a registered business?
No. Neither the freelancer nor the client needs to have a registered business to use Useme. When you create an account, you can choose whether you represent a company or not.
Do I need to upload files with the completed work to Useme?
Yes, we ask for these files so that the process is fully legal – they confirm deliverables. Freelancers must upload the finished work or files that prove the work was done, such as:
- a screenshot,
- a part or several parts of the work,
- a timesheet,
- a report.
Here are examples of files we accept.
What are the service fees?
There are no setup fees, and having an account on Useme is always free. We charge a service fee only for deals settled through our platform.
How is copyright managed?
In each deal, a freelancer can choose one of these options:
- Transfer the copyright to the client – this means giving it up completely and permanently, so the freelancer can’t sell the work again.
- Grant a license to the client – the client can use the work for 15 years, but the freelancer can still sell it to others.
- Do neither of the above and retain the copyright.
After the payment, the client gets a document confirming the license or a copyright transfer, depending on the freelancer’s choice. Everything is done online – no printing, signing, or scanning is needed.
Why there’s no tax identification number on a deposit request?
We don’t include the client’s tax ID on the deposit request because it’s not an accounting document – it’s a commercial offer. This avoids accounting confusion.
The tax ID will appear on the final invoice after the deposit request is paid.
Do Useme’s invoices include VAT?
Whether VAT is added depends on the client’s legal status:
- Companies: We use the reverse charge mechanism – no VAT is added on the invoice. Reverse charge VAT invoices mean that the gross and net amounts on the invoice are the same because the invoice is exempt from VAT. The client will pay the VAT in their country according to the applicable local rate.
- Individuals: We add 23% VAT.
Clients from Poland (both companies and individuals) always get 23% VAT invoices except for a few specific exemptions required by law.
Does Useme support cross-border deals?
That’s exactly what we’re for! We simplify international freelance deals by handling different currencies, formalities, and legal frameworks. You can work with clients and freelancers anywhere in the world, except in countries subject to international sanctions.
What’s Useme Jobs for?
Useme Jobs is both a job board and a freelancer directory. Freelancers can find new gigs, and clients can engage new freelancers. There are two types of collaboration in Useme Jobs:
Public jobs
- Read if you're an employer: How to post a job on Useme Jobs
- Read if you’re a freelancer: How to add an offer to a public job on Useme Jobs
Private jobs
- Read if you're an employer: How to invite a freelancer to a private job
- Read if you’re a freelancer: How private job invitations work
How to edit the deposit request
If you’ve got a deposit request with errors, contact us before paying or go to your employer’s account and edit the details yourself under Settings → Employer.
Any changes you make here will appear later on the final invoice – but not on the deposit request itself.
After payment, changes are only possible through a corrective note or corrective invoice.
Can I edit the final invoice?
No, the final invoice can’t be edited directly. However, we can change some of the details with a corrective note or correction invoice if needed. Both the freelancer and employer must confirm changes.
To request changes to your final invoice, contact us or send us a corrective note.
When does Useme verify my deal?
If your deal doesn’t meet the criteria for automatic verification, our Customer Service team will review it. We work from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (UTC+2).
If you invoice a client after 5 p.m. and it requires manual verification, it will usually be checked by 5 p.m. the following workday.
Is it possible to invoice without a deposit request?
Yes, you should contact us and let us know. The final invoice will then have a deferred payment term and include an additional admin fee. This fee is 19 EUR/USD/GBP or 69 PLN and is covered by the freelancer or employer, depending on what you agree on between yourself.
Why don’t I get emails from Useme?
If you’re not getting emails from Useme, check your spam folder. If our messages aren’t there, contact your email provider and ask them to add the useme.com domain to your safe sender list.
How to cancel my deal
Whether you can cancel depends on the current deal stage. Contact us and let us know which deal you want to cancel, including its number (starting with “UM”). We’ll let you know what to do next.
When does the freelancer get paid?
We send payouts to freelancers on business days. Most arrive within 24 hours, but in special cases, it may take up to 3 days.
The overall transfer time depends heavily on the freelancer’s bank or payment system (like PayPal).
“After the deal is finished” means:
- For the Invoice a client feature: After we get the client’s payment.
- For Useme Jobs deals: After the client accepts the freelancer’s work files.
Learn more about payment times.
What are the available payment methods?
In general, freelancers can receive their payments to Wise, PayPal, Payoneer, or bank accounts, but not all these methods are available in every country.
If you’re logged in, you can check available payout methods under Settings → Payouts → click “Set up” next to the currency to see your options.
Contact us if you have questions about Useme’s payment methods in your country.
When will my account be verified?
After you create an account, it’s added to the verification queue. Typically, the process is completed within 24 hours on business days.
To speed up your account verification, ensure that all the information you enter in your Useme profile is true. Once verified, you’ll see that in a notification bell on your profile.
If you’ve been waiting longer than 24 hours, check your inbox – we might have asked you for additional information and are waiting for your response.
